Member of the Month - Eugene Belleza

Updated: Apr 15

If you run with a club in St. Louis, there’s a good chance you’ve already met Eugene Belleza. Not only is he the lead organizer of BWC Run, but he also runs with more than half a dozen other clubs in the area too, including the Track Club.

Eugene is getting ready to run his 100th marathon later this month – the Eugene Marathon in Eugene, OR, of course. He ran it as his 50th marathon in 2016, and he’s hoping this year will also be his 50th sub-4 hour marathon state. With a group of nearly 30 local friends and runners going along to cheer or run, we think he’s got a pretty good chance of making that goal!

Let’s get to know Eugene a little better.

  1. Do you have any pre-race/run rituals or superstitions?

I always have the same pre-race breakfast: bagel, banana, and water

I always get to the race start super early when there are no lines for the porta-potties.

  1. If you could run a race/run anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Australia or New Zealand (I haven’t run an International race…yet)

  1. What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you while running?

I finished the Mesa Marathon with the exact same time down to the second (3:33:11) as a friend who crossed the starting line a couple minutes ahead of me because I was still in the porta-potty.

  1. What's your favorite post-run indulgence?

Nachos and a margarita

  1. Who's your running inspiration, and why?

Local legend Denis McCarthy.  He runs more marathons in a month than I run all year.

  1. What's one piece of advice you'd give to a new runner?

When you’re starting out, run by time not by miles (i.e. Plan to run for 20 minutes, not 2 miles).

  1. Besides running, what's another hobby or passion of yours?

Cooking and baking.  The benefit of my running group is I bring my baking samples to the run.

  1. Finish this sentence: “Running is my…”

identity

  1. What is your favorite memory with the Track Club?

Volunteering for the 2020 SLTC half-marathon.  What a weird time that was.

  1. Do you run with any other clubs in the area?
